— Beth to Josh
|
Beth Washington is a false protagonist and playable character in Until Dawn. Beth was the youngest of the Washington siblings—the sister of Josh and the twin sister of Hannah Washington. After Hannah fell victim to a prank, Beth followed her into the woods, where they encountered a mysterious creature that forced them off a cliff. Beth died from her fall and was not found until a year later.[2]
Like Hannah, she was voiced and motion captured by actress Ella Lentini.
Appearance
Beth has an A-line bob with full bangs under her white beanie. She wears a half-sleeved gray sweater, darker gray yoga pants, and cream-colored boots during the Prologue. Her accessories include black and turquoise bracelets, a ring, and a watch (which can be found very late in the game). When going outside, she wears a fuchsia winter coat of the brand 'PolarX,' which she eventually gives to her sister. Her nails are painted with French tips.
Beth weighs 110 lbs (50 kg) and her height is 5'8" (172 cm).[3] Like most of her family, she has dark brown eyes.
Personality
Beth is a caring and protective girl. Contrary to her sister, she does not come across as naive, but rather firm and resolute. After the prank played on Hannah, Beth was visibly angry at Mike, Emily, Ashley, Matt, and Jessica, calling them "jerks" and running into the cold woods to look for her sister.
Upon finding Hannah, she immediately gave her her coat, and when Hannah tripped and fell while running away from (what was later revealed to be) a Wendigo, Beth quickly turned back to help her get up again, putting herself at risk. Her highest traits are honest and charitable, while her lowest are funny and romantic.

One Year Ago
In the original game
Beth is the first character seen in the game, shown looking outside the lodge's window. She then catches a glimpse of the Stranger outside and asks Josh (who is passed out after drinking too much alcohol) if he noticed the figure. Beth then roams around the room, eventually finding the note from Mike inviting Hannah up to the room for the prank. She asks herself what her 'naive sister' got herself into now.
Beth then sees someone (later revealed to be Hannah) running outside from the window. Confused, Beth either has the option to wake Josh or find the others. If she tries to wake Josh, she is unable to rouse him. She quickly puts on a coat, follows the other out to the front of the lodge and hears Sam calling after Hannah. Beth joins them and asks everyone what happened. The group dismisses it as them "messing around", while Emily claims "it's just a prank", believing Hannah overreacted. Beth is angered; after calling them jerks, she sprints into the woods to look for Hannah. Soon, she hears a noise and sees footprints on the ground, both leading to different directions. She can choose to either follow the footprints or the noise, pulling out her phone and using the flashlight to see better. After walking more, she sees a death totem on the ground, depicting herself and Hannah dying after falling from a great height. She also hears strange noises and sees apparently random bursts of fire in the distance.
Beth and Hannah are forced off the cliff's edge.
Beth finally catches Hannah sitting on the ground, crying. Beth is relieved, offers Hannah her coat, and helps her up. Suddenly, they hear a noise (later revealed to be the Makkapitew), look back and start running from it. As they run to a bridge, Hannah trips and falls. Beth quickly helps her up. By doing so, her phone falls from her coat pocket and into one of the slits in the bridge. Hearing the creature close in on them makes them slowly walk backward to the edge of the cliff. Hannah loses her footing and falls over the edge, dragging Beth with her. However, Beth manages to desperately hang onto a protruding branch with her free hand while trying to support Hannah with the other.
In the remake
Beth approaches the deer.
Chapter 1
The one-year anniversary of the sisters' disappearance is mentioned on a radio report Sam is listening to. She changes the report to a different screen showing a video message from Josh, who remarks that Hannah and Beth would be happy if they knew they were coming together in remembrance of them.
Chapter 2
Chris and Sam can try to comfort Josh about his missing sisters. Josh may later mention he used to play baseball on the mountain with his family during the summer, including his sisters.
Chapter 3
Ashley, Chris, and Josh find a spirit board and attempt to contact a spirit for fun. However, the spirit they 'contact' asks for help. Chris, feeling skeptical about the board, asks Ashley about its identity, stating that they cannot help if they don't know who it is. Ashley obeys Chris' advice and asks the spirit who they are, to which it responds with "'sister.'" The atmosphere suddenly tenses up as all three are now scared that they may be talking to Hannah or Beth. Josh, distressed by the answer, wants to know which sister it is. Here, Ashley has the choice to say if it's Hannah or Beth they're speaking to. Regardless, the counter moves to 'yes'. The 'sister' communicating with them directs Ashley and Chris to the library as Josh leaves, accusing Chris and Ashley of this whole ordeal in order for him to have some closure and says that they're "full of it."
After Ashley, Chris and Josh ask the spirit, be it Beth or Hannah, how they died or who killed them, a ghost can be briefly seen in the background. Will Byles, the director of the game, has confirmed this is a real ghost[4] and is in fact Beth's ghost.[5]
Chapter 5
Matt and Emily may find Beth's phone under some wooden boards on the bridge Beth and Hannah had run through one year prior. The couple becomes extremely confused, stating that they thought police had swept the whole area.
Chapter 6
While searching the basement for Sam, Ashley and Chris are being guided and spooked by a supposed ghost. Upon seeing it for the second time, Ashley will exclaim that the ghost looks like Hannah or Beth. Chris and Ashley then speculate whether the ghost followed them from the seance, which Chris denies on the basis that ghosts don't exist, but can't rationalize what was happening at the seance. This is later revealed to be Josh's doing.
Chapter 7
Emily finds Beth's head.
As Emily wanders through the mines, she can find Beth's rotten, decapitated head sitting atop a pile of rocks.[6] She can also find a cross with Beth's name on it and a date on it: February 2, 2014, the day the prank on Hannah took place. Based on the rough carvings on the cavern walls and an assortment of Hannah's belongings, Emily can deduce that Hannah survived the fall, but Beth was instantly killed.
At the lodge, Josh reveals himself as the Psycho and explains that his motivation stems from the disappearance of Hannah and Beth as a result of the prank.
Chapter 8
If Emily escaped her Wendigo encounter in the mines, she will return to the lodge and inform the group of what she thinks happened to Hannah and Beth. She can mention finding Beth's head, confirming Beth's death to the rest of the group. If Emily did not find Beth's head, but found her cross, she will mention finding the latter instead. Additionally, if Emily missed any clues in the mines, she may also reveal having found Beth's phone.
Chapter 10
Beth, along with Hannah, appears to Josh during his hallucination in the mines. They are shown to be slightly cracked and dead in appearance. In the hallucination, Beth blames Josh for their death, claiming he wanted them to die and that he did nothing to save them. This is a depiction of Josh's own mind and feelings tormenting him. They disappear for a few seconds before emerging from intestines, now bloodied. After repeating the same sentence once again, Josh demands them to leave him alone. Now having terrified Josh to no end, they disappear only for a huge Wendigo head to show up through the cavern wall and screech at Josh before the scene cuts to Sam and Mike.
While they search the mines for Josh, Sam can find Beth's watch in a dug-up grave. Shortly after, she can find Hannah's diary, which confirms that Beth died immediately a few seconds before hitting the cavern floor. It also describes how Hannah buried her corpse, but eventually succumbed to her hunger and regretfully dug up her body to eat her flesh for sustenance, unaware of the fact that a Wendigo spirit had begun to possess her.
Credits (Mentioned)
- If Emily found Beth's head and survived until dawn, while Matt, Jessica, Sam and Mike died, she will mention her discovery in the police interview, saying that she saw Beth's head in the mines.
- If Sam survived, she also indirectly mentions Beth when talking about Josh, saying she tried to support him "after his sisters disappeared."
Death
Beth shatters her spine on a rock.
After Beth and Hannah fall from the ledge while backing away from a Wendigo, Beth grabs onto a branch. The Stranger reaches out to Beth, who then has the option to either drop Hannah and attempt to grab the Stranger's hand, let go of the branch altogether, or do nothing. Regardless of whether she lets go of the branch and she and Hannah fall together, or if she drops Hannah and tries to take the Stranger's hand and then falls, Beth dies from a fatal injury to her spine after she hits a rock.
Relationships
Hannah
See Hannah and Beth for more information.
Beth was Hannah's younger twin sister, and the two were very close. Finding Hannah naïve, Beth tried to look out for her, and the remake indicates that Hannah may have been aware of this. In one diary entry in the remake, Hannah writes that she did not tell Beth about meeting with Mike because she knew Beth would find the idea stupid. Beth is also indicated to be protective of Hannah as she, after the prank, is the one who follows Hannah into the woods. Upon finding her, Beth gives her jacket to Hannah.
Hannah and Beth in the woods.
The two are then pursued by an unknown danger. After reaching the end of a cliff, Hannah slips and drags Beth down before Beth manages to grab onto a protruding branch. The Stranger appears and extends his hand in an attempt to rescue them. Beth has the option to either drop her sister to save herself or let go of the branch. Regardless, the twins plummet from the cliff and into the mines. The fall kills Beth and leaves Hannah gravely hurt. In Hannah's journal, found by Sam in the mines, she expresses sorrow for the death of her sister and extreme regret in digging her up to eat her corpse. Before resorting to cannibalism, Hannah had tried to give Beth a proper burial. She created a cross with her sister's name and date of death on it.
In Beth’s relationship stats, Hannah ranks highest.
Josh
Beth is shown to have trusted and cared for her brother Josh, and vice versa. A beach photo of Josh, Beth, and Hannah can be found in the lodge; it depicts them happy at Cape Cod. Additionally, Josh is able to tell Sam of happy memories he has playing baseball with his parents and sisters. During the Prologue, Beth checks on Josh who has passed out at the kitchen counter and jokes about him out-drinking everyone. In the remake, she and Hannah then carry him over to a sitting room and rest him on a couch. After Hannah is pranked, Beth has the option to go to Josh for help. However, she will be unable to wake him up.
After the twins go missing, Josh is shown to harbor extreme guilt and anger. He even goes so far as to "prank" his friends, claiming that the mental torture he subjects them to is justified because it was meant to show his friends how his sisters must have felt a year prior. While in the mines, Josh hallucinates both Hannah and Beth who ask why he let them die and ask him to stay with them.
In Beth's stats, Josh is second place, after Hannah.
Ashley
Ashley and Beth were part of the same group of friends and were both present during the party in the Prologue. During the Prologue, Ashley takes part in pranking Hannah, and Beth calls the whole group jerks before running from the lodge after her sister. A year later, Ashley acts as the medium during a seance she holds with Chris and Josh, and she can ask if she is communicating with Beth. If she does, she can try to apologize to Beth for what had happened to previous year or ask her who killed Hannah.
In Beth's stats, Ashley is tied with Emily for the last rank.
Chris
Beth smiles at Chris.
Chris is the best friend of Beth's brother, Josh. Like Beth, he did not take part in pranking Hannah. In the remake, Beth becomes startled when a passed-out Chris drops a beer bottle. She sets the bottle upright and checks on him, grinning at doodles which Jessica and Emily had drawn on his face.
In Beth's stats, Chris ranks below Hannah, Josh, Sam, and Jessica, but above the rest.
Emily
Beth and Emily were part of the same group of friends and appear in the Remembrance Board photo together. However, during the Prologue, Emily took part in pranking Hannah, and Beth called her and the others "jerks" before running to find her sister. A year later, Emily can find Beth's missing poster in the fire tower. Later, upon discovering Beth's head in the mines, Emily reacts with panic and is visibly upset upon seeing the decayed head of her friend. If she survives her chase, she tells her friends what she knows about Beth and Hannah's fates. She may also inform the police about finding Beth's head.
In Beth's stats, Emily is ranked last, along with Ashley.
Jessica
In the past, Beth and Jessica were friends. Beth's stats show that they had a good relationship, and they appear together, along with Emily and Hannah, in a photograph on the Remembrance Board in Josh's basement. However, Jessica was the one who formulated the plan to prank Hannah, and Beth calls her and the others jerks before running after her sister. A year later, Jessica may later refer to the prank as "stupid and half-baked," but she will also claim that Hannah and Beth running into the woods was "a dumb thing."
In Beth's stats, Jessica places below Hannah, Josh, and Sam, but above the rest.
Matt
Beth and Matt are part of the same group of friends. However, Matt participated in pranking Hannah, and Beth calls him and the others "jerks" as she runs after her sister. Matt will mention how, after the events of the night, the disappearance of the twins makes more sense. He may also find her cell phone and question how thoroughly the police searched the mountain for the twins.
In Beth's stats, Matt is tied with Mike and placed below Hannah, Josh, Sam, Chris and Jess, but above Ashley and Emily.
Mike
While Beth and Mike were among the same group of friends, Beth seemed to disapprove of her sister's infatuation with him. Upon reading the fake love letter from Mike to Hannah, Beth calls her sister naive. In the remake, of Hannah's diary entries, mentions that Beth would find the meeting between Mike and Hannah stupid. Therefore, Hannah does not tell Beth about it. Mike participated in pranking Hannah, and Beth calls him and the others "jerks" before running after her sister. Mike can later recall the event as a blur, or claim the twins would be happy they are remembering them. Should Sam find Beth’s watch, Mike will express confusion, and if she finds Hannah’s journal, Mike will be in disbelief over the fact that Hannah cannibalized Beth.
In Beth's stats, Mike is tied with Matt and placed below Hannah, Josh, Sam, Chris and Jess, but above Ashley and Emily.
Sam
Sam is the best friend of Beth's sister, Hannah. Neither of them took part in the prank during the Prologue and both expressed anger towards those who participated. Sam can initially learn about Beth's death from Emily. Later, in the mines, she may find Beth's watch as well as Hannah's journal which explains that Hannah ate her deceased sister after a month without rescue. Upon this revelation, Sam will be distraught and insist that she and Mike find Josh and inform him.
Sam is listed as Beth's third highest relationship and highest non-familial relationship.
Until Dawn: Rush of Blood
Hannah and Beth appear in the VR spin-off Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, during the Nightmare Descent level.
The Inpatient
Hannah and Beth can also appear in one of the endings of the prequel The Inpatient. They will be seen being chased in the forest, fleeing the Makkapitew (in this case, the player) and approaching the edge of the clifftop.
Trivia
- She is the only playable character who isn't one of the protagonists.
- Beth, Jack Fiddler and Hannah are the only characters who have fixed deaths.
- The Inpatient features a trophy called "The Wendigo," earned for chasing Beth and Hannah.
- Beth's highest traits are honest and charitable, while her lowest traits are funny and romantic.
- Among the ten characters present in the Prologue, Beth is the only one to go by a singular first name rather than a full name and a nickname.
- Beth and Hannah are the first two characters to encounter a Wendigo (not counting the Stranger).
- It was originally incorrectly assumed that Ella Lentini, Hannah and Beth's voice actress, was also part of the original cast when the game was developed for the PS3, alongside Noah Fleiss, Chris' voice actor, and Brett Dalton, Mike's voice actor. However, she has since confirmed in a Twitch livestream that she was not involved in the PS3 iteration of Until Dawn. Megan Prescott played Beth and Hannah in the PS3 beta.
- Beth's height and weight are the same as Hannah's.
- In PlayStation 3 Beta version of the game, Beth's appearance (like Hannah's) was quite different; she had short, combed brown hair and different facial features. However, her clothes were almost the same as in the final version, except that her coat was blue instead of pink and she seemed to wear a white shirt underneath.
- In the beta version of the Family Portrait, her hairstyle is a blonde bob.
- Some cut dialogue reveals Beth wore glasses during early PS4 development of the game, as Ashley and Chris could find Beth's glasses case. Ashley then states that Beth loved being in the library.
- In a PlayStation 3 era photograph of Beth and Hannah found on the desk in the lodge in the final version, Beth is wearing glasses.
- In the 2024 remake, Beth's line "Where's my sister going?" is replaced with a different take – "Where's she going?"
- Additionally, she grabs her winter jacket from the kitchen chair area instead of grabbing it from a couch like in the original game.
- Beth has unused dialogue where she talks about everyone having had a lot to drink, and then about intervening with Hannah's meetup before she "makes a complete fool of herself." After the prank on Hannah, she has alternate takes of asking the others "What's going on? Where's Hannah going?" and "What have you done?!?"
- Beth has won several sporting awards: "National Championship Finalist 2010" in soccer, "MVP 2011" in hockey, and "State Championship Runner Up 2011."[8]
- Beth's brief appearance as a real ghost in the background during the séance in Chapter 3 has been confirmed by Will Byles, the director of the game.[5]
